Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Jamal is the Professor and Head of Pulmonology Department at Allama Iqbal Medical College. He did his graduation from Quaid-i-Azam Medical College in 1987, and after selection from PPSC served in rural health service for two years. He has over 25 years of experience in Pulmonary Medicine and working in different tertiary care hospitals (PIMS, BVH, Mayo, Services & Jinnah) as well as abroad. He initially served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and in-charge of Pulmonology Department in Quaid-i-Azam Medical College, BVH and converted the basic department into a teaching unit recognised for FCPS training. He supervised seven FCPS & MCPS trainees there. He worked as a Consultant Pulmonologist in Dubai for one and a half year. He also worked as an Associate Professor in Pulmonology & Critical Care Medicine in Services Institute of Medical Sciences at Services Hospital, Lahore for four years, having trained six postgraduate students there. In Services Hospital, he got more experience of critical care management and sleep medicine. After selections from PPSC on first merit, he is posted as a Professor of Pulmonology Department in Jinnah Hospital since 2016.

In 2016, he organised the 12th Biennial International conference of Pulmonology and Critical Care in Lahore as a conference secretary, where along with eminent local speakers a lot of foreign delegates from USA and UK participated. The feedback from local and foreign delegates was that it was well organised and one of the best conference in history of chest medicine in Pakistan. He is an active member of Pakistan chest society, having developed official website of PCS and also served as President of Pakistan Chest Society Punjab. He is also an examiner of MCPS & FCPS exams since 2010. Along with his services in the field of Pulmonology, he has also 10 research articles published during this period, and one of them was selected for poster presentation in European Respiratory Society Congress. 

Pulmonology Department of Jinnah Hospital was established in 1998 and is located at the north-east corner of the 4th floor. It has a 50-bedded purpose-built ward, including an HDU & separate bays for TB patients, a Bronchoscopy suit, a Procedure Room, a Pulmonary Function Test Room, a state of the art Sleep Lab and a classroom which is fully equipped with audio visual facilities for teaching and training of undergraduate and post graduate students. The department is offering various diagnostic and therapeutic facilities to cater diseases like Infections (Pneumonia, TB), Breathing disorders (Asthma, COPD Interstitial Lung Diseases), Lung Malignancies and Pleural Disorders. Procedures like Bronchoscopy, Chest intubations, Pleural Biopsies, Tru-cut Biopsy are routinely done here. Non-invasive Ventilation like CPAP and BIPAP are provided here. Pulmonology Department has separate OPD at ground floor and provides daily outdoor services.

It is also running a PMDT site for Drug Resistant TB on daily basis. The department is recognised by College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan for FCPS & MCPS (Pulmonology) and University of Health Sciences for DTCD & MD (Pulmonology). Many doctors who were trained here are currently working as consultants in different parts of Pakistan and abroad. Pulmonology Department is also part of undergraduate teaching and training of students in their 4th & final year classes and is actively involved in research projects on regular basis. Multiple research papers have been published by the faculty and post graduate residents.

Apart from teaching and training of undergraduate & post graduate residents, we provide the following diagnostic facilities in the department:

  • A 50 bed Indoor facility with a HDU, separate room for TB patients and 5 isolation beds for Drug Resistant TB.
  • Daily OPD services
  • Spirometry/Pulmonary function test
  • Daily MDR Clinic/ PMDT site for Drug Resistant TB in collaboration with NTP and WHO
  • Bronchoscopy for Lung Biopsy and Broncho Alveolar Lavage
  • Sleep lab for sleep studies
  • Minor Surgical Procedures: Chest Intubations, Pleural Biopsy, Tru-Cut Lung Biopsy
  • Non-invasive supportive ventilation such as CPAP and BiPAP
