Dr Ambereen Anwar Imran did her MBBS from Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore in 1988. She joined Punjab Health Department as a demonstrator in 1991. Her M.Phil in Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology was completed in 2001. She was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2015 and joined AIMC as the Head of the Department of Pathology. She has been involved in teaching the undergraduates as well as postgraduates throughout her entire professional tenure. Having supervised numerous thesis, she has authored over 65 research papers. She has attended numerous national as well as international conferences and workshops over the years. She is the co-author of an atlas called Challenges in Dermatopathology. Under her excellent supervision, the Department of Pathology is growing by leaps and bounds and is wholly ambitious to make its mark in the field of education as well. Teaching students of MBBS is the focus of the department. The hard work that is put in, gets rewarded every year by the numerous university positions and honours won by the students.

Pathology is said to form a bridge between the basic and clinical sciences. The Department of Pathology at AIMC, is well known for its active involvement in academic and research activities. It also provides diagnostic facilities to patients of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. The department is divided into four main sections namely Histopathology, Haematology, Microbiology and Chemical Pathology. A well-established Molecular Biology section, headed by Prof Fouzia Ashraf, is its distinguishing feature. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, a dedicated Corona Lab was established which played a pivotal role in the fight against the deadly disease.

Another unique diagnostic modality is the flow cytometry being run by Prof. Dr. Sajjad Haider who has received special training in the field from SKMCH. This vital test is available at only a few centers in Pakistan. Histopathology section of AIMC caters to one of the highest workloads in the province. Prof. Ameena Ashraf’s area of specialization is histopathology. As a supervisor, she has trained numerous histopathologists who are now serving in various institutions both within Pakistan and abroad. Under the dynamic supervision of Prof Ambereen Anwar, the department is rapidly progressing and acquiring new diagnostic modalities. The faculty of the department is reputed to be the best in the province. They are unmatched in their qualifications as well as zeal in serving humanity. The technical staff associated with the department is also highly skilled. Both internal and external quality assurance programmes are running successfully.

  • Along with the teaching and training of undergraduate medical students, the department is also recognized by CPSP and University of Health Sciences for FCPS and M Phil training in Haematology and Histopathology.
  • The Department of Pathology is offering BS Hons programme in Medical Laboratory Technology and providing teaching facilities for Physiotherapy and BS Hons Nursing courses.
  • Editorial office of Journal of AIMC is also located here. It is managed by Dr Muhammad Imran who is highly respected for his dedication to AIMC. Currently, there are approximately 50 research projects running in the department.
  • Many research articles, case reports and review articles are regularly published in national as well as international journals. Over a hundred papers have been published by the department during the last two years. Dr Farhan Rasheed is a renowned microbiologist whose international publications are highly acclaimed.
  • The department is providing excellent diagnostic services to indoor as well as outdoor patients of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. Its total annual workload is approximately 200,000 tests. These services are made possible by the joint efforts of doctors and technical staff which work together as a well-amalgamated team.
  • A hallmark of the department is a state-of-the-art TB laboratory equipped with GENEXPERT and the facility of Chemiluminescence.
