HEAD OF NEUROSURGERY DEPARTMENT

Professor Naveed Ashraf  is the Chairman and founder of the current Neurosurgery Department at Jinnah Hospital Lahore. He has been a practicing neurosurgeon for over 30 years in which he has acquired an extensive general neurosurgical practice with an interest in cerebrovascular disease and traumatic brain injury. In 2012, a separate unit was established for him at Lahore General Hospital in which he held the first chair of the third unit.

Professor Ashraf has secured competitive government funding in excess of £5 million to establish Jinnah hospital Lahore as the leading institute in the country. His contributions boast establishment of our Neurosurgery led Neurocritical care unit dedicated for taking care of the forsaken sTBI patients in Pakistan. Our unit is the national referral centre for cerebrovascular disease where Professor Ashraf regularly performs some of the most complex neurosurgical pathologies.

He has founding contributions to Neurosurgical Department at Lahore General Hospital to become the independent Punjab Institute of Neuroscience. He is currently the lead examiner and convener for the MS Neurosurgery exit exam and OSCE lead. He is the chairman of the specialty committee for MS Neurosurgery and the Convener of the Synopsis review committee of the University of Health Sciences. He has revised and updated the curriculum for MS Neurosurgery with an input from Royal College of Glasgow.

Department of Neurosurgery of Allama Iqbal Medical College at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore is a leading centre for neurosurgical patient care, postgraduate training and research. It has emerged to be a prominent institute of excellence in a very short span of time, rapidly grown to become a top-notch center in terms of patient care, teaching and clinical research. Our main area of pride has been the development of the Neurosurgery driven Neurocritical Care Unit. It has profoundly influenced the outcome in patients of severe traumatic brain injury. We are a level 1 trauma center serving a wide geographical area. Another distinguishing feature is the state of the art operation theater suite, fully equipped with all the modern neurosurgical tools. Among many of them the hall marks are the facilities such as our intraoperative CT scan and Neurosimulation for training of our residents ( the only department in the country to have either of these).

We have a patient centered approach and our motto is ‘WE CARE’. We prepare them for the life ahead and educate their families about the disease and long-term requirements. Our compassion and empathy are stoked by the fact that a vast majority of our patients are from the under privileged section of the society. We believe in fostering a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, and delivering to patients the best possible experiences and outcomes.
